On 30th May, 2009, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) conferred on Dr. Yaw Perbi the award of “Youth Model Icon of the Year.” Such an award was to go to “a youth who can serve as an icon (mentor) to the other youth and has distinguished himself or herself from his/her colleagues and his making positive impact nationally. The purpose is to identify and present a youth personality that other youth can look at as beacon.”

As fate would have it, the key responsibility of the award winner for this category was to “mentor all student awardees of that year for at least one year.” What was going to be a laborious and resource-demanding activity of searching for ALI Scholars to kick-start ALIncubator in Ghana had thus been inadvertently taken care of. Here were 15 (instead of the originally proposed 12) top Ghanaian youth dying to be mentored—all of them award winners ranging from Best Student Writer/Author through Best Sports Personality to Best Student Entrepreneur!
